Funny thing about writing... The writer learns ten times as much as the one who reads the writing. It's true. At least it sure was with my latest book, ONCE BLIND: THE STORY OF JOHN NEWTON. You know his story. He was the wretch who was saved by God's amazing grace. John Newton poured out his story in the hymn he wrote, "Amazing Grace."
Here is the story in a nutshell: Tortured childhood to forced service in the Royal Navy to blasphemous troublemaker traded to a slave ship to horrific enslavement to slave ship captain. And all the time God pursued him with relentless love and amazing grace. Yep, God won. John Newton became a powerful preacher with a ringing story that helped to change the heart of a nation and bring the African slave trade to an end.
A swashbuckling adventure awash in amazing grace.
My friends, we have never needed John Newton's legacy more than today. For 200 years later, more people are enslaved than ever. The last chapter of the book tells what it means to be an abolitionist 21st Century style.
Researching this book has changed my life. My prayer is that it will touch yours as well.
